1 à 3 Les harpes muettes.

Les fleuves de Babylone : l'Euphrate et ses nombreux canaux. Le nom de la capitale peut d'ailleurs désigner ici le pays entier. Les déportés, dans leurs moments de loisir, cherchaient la solitude au bord des fleuves, où le murmure des flots fait oublier l'agitation humaine. C'est au bord du fleuve Kébar qu'Ezéchiel eut sa première révélation (Ezéchiel 1.3), et Daniel se vit transporté en vision au bord du fleuve Oulaï (Ezéchiel 8.2).

Nous nous sommes assis : pour méditer ; mais la méditation s'est changée en pleurs.

Nous souvenant de Sion, la ville des pères, mais plus. encore celle de l'Eternel (voir la note d'introduction).

Les ennemis d'Israël avaient emmené le peuple en captivité. Ils insultaient les Juifs en permanence en leur demandant d'être joyeux et de chanter. C'était vraiment cruel et en même temps un sacrilège de louer par des cantiques un autre dieu que celui d'Israël. Il ne faut pas chercher à s'associer à ce genre de moquerie et ne pas chanter d'hymnes parmi les idolâtres.
