Psaumes 80.8

(80 : 9) Tu avais arraché de l'Égypte une vigne ; Tu as chassé des nations, et tu l'as plantée.
Dieu des armées célestes, rétablis-nous, montre-toi favorable, et nous serons sauvés !
Dieu de l’univers, relève-nous ! Fais briller ton visage, et nous serons sauvés !

L'église est représentée, ici, telle une vigne gérée par un vigneron. La racine de cette vigne, c'est Christ, les branches représentent les croyants. L'église, tout comme la vigne, a besoin d'un tuteur pour qu'elle puisse s'étendre et être fructueuse. Aucun arbre ne peut être aussi inutile qu'une vigne qui ne donne aucun fruit. Et ne sommes-nous pas plantés dans un jardin bien cultivé, avec tous les moyens disponibles pour avoir des œuvres fructueuses et droites ? Mais les feuilles et les rameaux inutiles se retrouvent hélas bien plus fréquemment que les formes de piété réelle. Ce n'est que gâchis et ruine. Il y avait de bonnes raisons pour que cela changeât au travers du chemin offert par Dieu.

Notre santé spirituelle dépend de l'opinion que Dieu a envers nous. Quand nous considérons l'état du plus bel aspect visible de l'église, nous ne sommes pas surpris de voir qu'elle a été l'objet d'une sévère correction divine. Dans ce psaume, il est demandé que Dieu aide cette vigne.

Seigneur, elle a été formée par Tes soins, et pour Toi, qu'elle puisse, en toute confiance s'appuyer sur Ta Personne !
