Selon l'usage des anciens, (Actes 15.23 ; 23.26) Paul met en tête de sa lettre sa signature et le nom des destinataires. Mais au lieu de la brève formule usitée, qui pour notre épître serait : "Paul aux Romains, salut," il ajoute à son nom les titres qui l'autorisent à s'adresser aux chrétiens de Rome et qui sont propres à assurer à son message un accueil favorable de la part d'une Eglise qu'il n'a pas fondée et dont il n'est pas connu de visage.

- Le premier de ces titres est : serviteur de (grec) Christ-Jésus.

Christ-Jésus est la leçon de B et de quelques Pères, adoptée par la plupart des critiques. Quand Christ précède Jésus, il a conservé, en quelque mesure, le sens qu'il a comme nom commun, même quand il n'est pas accompagné de l'article : le Christ, l'oint, en hébreu le Messie. Paul ne prend le titre de serviteur de Jésus-Christ, en tête d'une de ses lettres, qu'ici et dans Philippiens 1.1. Ailleurs il le donne à tous les croyants (1Corinthiens 7.22 ; Ephésiens 6.6)

Le terme de serviteur, qui signifie proprement esclave, exprime la condition d'appartenance : le chrétien appartient à Jésus-Christ qui l'a "acheté à prix." (1Corinthiens 7.22,23)

Dans Colossiens 4.12, Paul appelle Epaphras "serviteur de Jésus-Christ" par manière d'éloge. En se disant lui-même ici serviteur de Jésus-Christ (serviteur de Dieu, dans 1.1), il affirme sa complète consécration au Maître.

Il ajoute : apôtre en vertu d'un appel, pour indiquer quelles fonctions il accomplit au service de Jésus-Christ.

Ce titre d'apôtre (envoyé) désigne en premier lieu les douze témoins que Jésus s'était choisis. (Luc 6.13) Mais ce n'est qu'au second siècle qu'il leur fut réservé d'une manière exclusive. Au temps de Paul, il est attribué à tous les missionnaires ; (Romains 16.7 ; Actes 14.14) cependant alors déjà l'apostolat était considéré comme le premier des ministères. (1Corinthiens 12.28)

En s'attribuant cette qualité, Paul se met sur le même rang que les douze ; et comme il n'avait pas été de leur nombre durant la vie du Maître, il fait souvenir qu'il n'en a pas moins été appelé à l'apostolat par Jésus-Christ d'une manière directe et solennelle, (Actes 9.15 ; 26.16,17 ; Galates 1.1) qu'il est (grec) apôtre appelé.

L'adjectif appelé indique que la qualité d'apôtre lui appartient en vertu de cet appel. Paul ne s'arroge pas arbitrairement la charge d'apôtre, le Seigneur la lui a imposée par une vocation irrésistible. (1Corinthiens 9.16)

Paul ajoute un dernier trait destiné à caractériser l'action de la grâce souveraine de Dieu à son égard : mis à part pour l'Evangile de Dieu, c'est-à-dire pour l'annoncer. Dans Galates 1.15, il dit même que Dieu "l'a mis à part dès le sein de sa mère."

De toutes manières donc, son apostolat repose sur l'autorité de Dieu et non sur celle des hommes. (Galates 1.1) On a prétendu à tort que Paul faisait allusion à l'acte par lequel, sur l'ordre du Saint-Esprit, il fut avec Barnabas, "mis à part" pour là mission parmi les païens. (Actes 13.2) Il pense, non à cette consécration spéciale au sein de l'Eglise d'Antioche, mais à sa vocation initiale par le Seigneur lui même.

- On a remarqué que ce qualificatif : mis à part, est la traduction de l'épithète de "pharisien," dont Paul s'enorgueillissait avant sa conversion. (Philippiens 3.5)

Le grand objet de l'apostolat de Paul, l'unique but de sa vie, est l'Evangile, c'est-à-dire la "bonne nouvelle" du salut par grâce offert à tous les hommes. Cet Evangile est appelé ici l'Evangile de Dieu, parce qu'il émane directement de lui et qu'il est le message salutaire de Dieu à l'humanité déchue.

En écrivant aux Romains, l'apôtre semblait vouloir adresser, par son enseignement, des éléments de réponse aux incrédules, tout en instruisant les croyants Juifs ; il voulait également affermir la foi des chrétiens et convertir les païens idolâtres ; de plus, l’écrivain désirait souligner l’égalité des « Gentils » et des Juifs, en ce qui concerne leur condition religieuse et leur place dans la faveur divine.

Ces buts multiples sont présentés au lecteur, par le biais d’oppositions et de divers raisonnements, tant avec les Juifs, (incrédules ou non), qu’avec les « Gentils ».

Le chemin de l'acceptation d'un pécheur par Dieu, c'est-à-dire Sa justification, simplement par la Grâce, est clairement affirmé au travers de la foi en la Justice de Christ, sans distinction de nations. Cette doctrine se distingue des objections soulevées par les chrétiens judaïques, partisans de créer des critères d'accession au salut, par un mélange de la loi et de l'Évangile, et pour priver les païens de toute participation aux bénédictions apportées par le Messie. Dans la conclusion de l’épitre, l’auteur incite à la sainteté, par le biais de nombreuses exhortations pratiques.

* La mission de l'apôtre. (Romains 1:1-7) Il prie pour les saints à Rome, et désire les rencontrer. (Romains 1:8-15) Le chemin de l'Évangile et de la justification par la foi, tant pour les Juifs que pour les Gentils. (Romains 1:16,17) Les péchés des Gentils sont révélés. (Romains 1:18-32)

Romains 1:1-7 La doctrine enseignée par l'apôtre Paul expose l'accomplissement des promesses faites par les prophètes : il s’agit en fait de Jésus-Christ, le Sauveur, le Messie promis, de la descendance de David, par sa nature humaine, mais déclaré Fils de Dieu, par le pouvoir Divin qui Le ressuscita des morts. La profession chrétienne n’est pas constituée d’une connaissance théorique des Écritures, ni d’un simple consentement à une idéologie, encore moins de vaines discussions, mais uniquement d'obéissance. Seuls ceux qui sont amenés à l'obéissance de la foi peuvent prétendre « appartenir à Jésus-Christ.

Nous pouvons voir dans ce texte : 1- Le privilège des chrétiens : ils sont les bien-aimés de Dieu, et sont membres du « corps spirituel », lui aussi bien-aimé. 2- Le devoir des chrétiens : ils doivent être saints, (ils sont en effet appelés à le devenir).

Au début de cette épitre, l'apôtre Paul salue les « bienaimés qui sont à Rome », leur souhaitant la Grâce pour sanctifier leur âme, et la Paix pour consoler leur cœur ; ces deux bénédictions émanent de la Miséricorde divine, du Père, réconcilié avec tous les croyants, par le biais du Seigneur Jésus-Christ !
