La prédication, à son tour, suppose l'apostolat. Cet apostolat a été annoncé dans Esaïe 52.7.

La citation présente une variante. Le texte de notre traduction est celui de Sin., B, A, C, Versions égyp., Pères. Les autres documents portent : "qu'ils sont beaux les pieds de ceux qui annoncent (grec évangélisent) la paix, de ceux qui annoncent de bonnes nouvelles" (grec évangélisent de bonnes choses).

Plusieurs exégètes et critiques admettent toutefois que les mots : de ceux qui annoncent la paix, ont été omis par mégarde. Paul s'écarte des Septante pour se rapprocher du texte hébreux.

Si l'on considère comme authentiques les mots : de ceux qui annoncent la paix sa citation ne se distingue de l'original que par l'absence des mots : "sur les montagnes," et le pluriel au lieu du singulier : "celui qui annonce".

Les Septante suivent un texte tout différent : "J'arrive comme la belle saison sur les montagnes, comme les pieds de celui qui annonce (grec évangélise) une prédication de paix, comme celui qui annonce de bonnes choses..."

- Sin., et quelques majuscules portent l'article : les bonnes nouvelles ou les biens. Ce texte implique une allusion aux biens promis, que devait apporter le règne du Messie.

- Les Juifs incrédules ne veulent pas que l'Evangile soit annoncé aux païens ; ils admettent tout au plus une propagande parmi les nations en faveur du régime légal. Paul montre, en se fondant sur les prophètes, que la prédication du salut à tous les hommes est conforme à la volonté de Dieu.

Si Israël avait été fidèle à sa vocation, il serait devenu le messager de l'Evangile auprès de toutes les autres nations. L'œuvre de la mission parmi les païens est dans l'essence de l'Evangile ; l'Eglise qui néglige ce devoir se suicide ou plutôt montre qu'elle est déjà morte.
