Paul passe aux perspectives lumineuses qu'ouvre devant ses yeux ce salut qui est parvenu aux gentils par la chute des Israélites.

Leur faute a été la richesse du monde. Leur amoindrissement ou "état d'infériorité" (l'opposé de leur plénitude future) est devenu la richesse des gentils, des nations païennes.

Comment cela ? La parabole des vignerons infidèles nous l'apprend. "Le royaume vous sera ôté, dit Jésus aux chefs du peuple juif, et il sera donné à une nation qui en rendra les fruits." (Matthieu 21.43) Et les apôtres, conformément à ce dessein de Dieu, déclarent aux Juifs incrédules : "C'est à vous premièrement qu'il fallait annoncer la parole de Dieu ; mais puisque vous la rejetez et que vous ne vous jugez pas dignes de la vie éternelle, voici nous nous tournons vers les gentils." (Actes 13.46 ; comparez Actes 18.6).

Et, dans un sens plus profond, c'est bien la faute d'Israël, avec sa conséquence, le crucifiement du Saint et du Juste, qui a fait la richesse du monde.

Si donc le rejet du Sauveur par les Juifs, qui eut pour effet leur amoindrissement, leur exclusion temporaire de l'alliance de grâce, et qui semblait devoir anéantir les desseins de la miséricorde de Dieu, même envers le monde païen, a pourtant fait la richesse de celui-ci, combien plus leur conversion comme peuple, leur plénitude, sera-t-elle une immense bénédiction pour l'humanité ! (Comparer Zacharie 8.13,20,23 ; Esaïe 2.2,3 ; 60.1 et suivants ; versets 15,25)

Plusieurs interprètes prennent le mot que nous rendons par amoindrissement dans le sens de : "un petit nombre" ou de : "réduction à un plus petit nombre," et entendent par là soit l'état d'Israël après que les convertis au christianisme se sont séparés de leur peuple et l'ont diminué numériquement d'autant, soit "le petit nombre," "le reste," la minorité des Juifs gagnés à l'Evangile.

Si ce "petit nombre" (tel serait alors le raisonnement de l'apôtre) a fait la richesse des gentils, que sera ce de la plénitude, c'est à dire du retour des Israélites à leur nombre complet de la conversion du peuple en son entier !

On peut objecter à cette interprétation que, prendre les termes d'amoindrissement et de plénitude au sens quantitatif seulement, ce n'est peut être pas les saisir dans leur signification profonde.

Le langage dont Paul se sert nous place sur le terrain de la vie religieuse et morale : il parle de la faute d'Israël, de son "rejet," (verset 15, où se trouve le même contraste qu'ici) de son "retranchement," (verset 17) de son "endurcissement." (verset 25)

Enfin le mot même rendu par amoindrissement a toujours un sens fâcheux comme "défaite," "perte d'une bataille ou d'un procès ;" l'apôtre ne l'emploierait certainement pas pour désigner le petit nombre des Juifs convertis au christianisme.
