Il ne vient à la pensée de personne d'enter un rameau d'olivier sauvage sur un olivier franc.

L'apôtre se sert de cette image (comparez Jérémie 11.16) pour montrer d'une manière frappante que l'admission des gentils au salut, semblable à cette opération contre nature, (verset 24) n'était due qu'à la libre et souveraine grâce de Dieu.

Tu as été enté à leur place. Le grec porte : en elles, ce qui peut s'interpréter : à la place qu'elles occupaient.

Si cette interprétation paraît trop libre et si l'on estime que la traduction parmi elles s'impose, il faut supposer que l'apôtre pensait aux branches qui étaient restées sur l'olivier.

De la racine de la sève est la leçon de Sin., B, C. Les autres documents présentent deux variantes qui semblent des corrections. A, Majusc., portent : "de la racine et de la sève." D, Majusc., omettent de la racine.

La racine est l'organe par lequel l'olivier tire du sol sa sève.

Le mot traduit par sève signifie proprement graisse, parce que l'olivier produit un fruit oléagineux. (Juges 9.9)

Par cette image de la graisse ou de la sève de l'olivier franc, à laquelle participe l'olivier sauvage, l'apôtre désigne la bénédiction d'Abraham, qui s'accomplit pour les gentils en Jésus-Christ. (Galates 3.14)

L'idée de l'agrégation des gentils à Israël est commune à Paul et aux douze. Elle était indiquée déjà par Jésus. (Jean 10.16) Paul la relève afin de prémunir les chrétiens convertis du paganisme contre toute pensée d'orgueil. (1Corinthiens 4.7) Ils pouvaient être tentés de mépriser les Juifs incrédules et rejetés de Dieu.

Ce que nous appelons l'antisémitisme se manifestait déjà dans la société païenne du premier siècle. Ce dédain est tellement naturel au cœur du gentil, que Paul n'a pas grand espoir d'être obéi. Il ajoute en effet : mais si, malgré tout ce que je puis te dire, tu te glorifies quand même, le fait n'en demeure pas moins : ce n'est pas toi qui portes la racine, mais c'est la racine qui te porte. "Le salut vient des Juif" (Jean 4.22)
