Ce verset clôt l'argumentation développée dans versets 27-30 : la justification par la foi est attestée par la loi et les prophètes, (comparez verset 21) car

1° en ôtant à l'homme tout sujet de se glorifier, elle est conforme à la condamnation absolue que la loi prononce sur tout homme ; (versets 27,28)

2° en excluant la justification par les œuvres, qui n'est en aucun cas à la portée des gentils, elle montre qu'il n'y a qu'un seul et même Dieu pour Juifs et gentils et confirme ainsi l'unité de Dieu que proclame toute la loi. (versets 29,30)

Après cette double démonstration, l'apôtre peut conclure en réponse à ses adversaires, Juifs ou judéo-chrétiens, qui l'accusaient d'annuler la loi par la foi : Au contraire nous établissons la loi, littéralement. "nous la faisons tenir debout, nous la confirmons," en enseignant un moyen de justification qui est d'accord avec ses principes essentiels : la complète indignité de l'homme et l'unité de Dieu.
