Après les prêtres vient le tour des laïques idolâtres ; ils sont rangés en trois classes : les adorateurs des astres ; les partagés, c'est-à-dire ceux qui veulent réunir le culte de l'Eternel et celui des faux dieux ; les impies, qui ne veulent aucun culte. L'adoration des astres ou sabéisme était en rapport étroit avec le culte de Baal ; le soleil, la lune et les étoiles étaient honorés comme les foyers des forces de la nature adorées en Baal et en Astarté (voir 2Rois 21.3 ; 23.5). Sur les plates-formes des maisons étaient élevés des autels sans idoles, où l'on offrait à l'armée des cieux des parfums et des sacrifices (2Rois 23.12).

Ceux qui se prosternent... et jurent... : ils prêtent serment à l'Eternel, c'est-à-dire déclarent se consacrer à son service, et cependant ils jurent par leur Roi, c'est-à-dire qu'ils ont toujours sur les lèvres le nom de leur faux dieu, Baal, souvent appelé le Roi. On traduit aussi par Malcom ; il s'agirait alors de la divinité Moloch, dont le culte avait aussi été introduit chez les Israélites.
