World English Bible instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world;

Grec : "Nous éduque." nous instruit, nous forme pour toute cette vie chrétienne dont Paul va indiquer les principaux traits.

Aux convoitises mondaines, c'est-à-dire aux convoitises qui règnent dans le monde, et qui, si elles ne sont déracinées de notre cœur, nous font désirer le monde, ses joies, ses biens.

Grec : Que nous vivions sagement (ou prudemment, ou avec tempérance), et justement et pieusement.

La tempérance, c'est-àdire la modération, le détachement, le renoncement, se rapporte à nous-mêmes ; la justice, qui renferme tous les principes de l'équité, de l'honnêteté, de la droiture, s'applique ici aux hommes et à nos relations avec eux ; la piété exprime tous les rapports de l'âme avec Dieu, la crainte et l'amour que nous lui devons, une communion intime avec lui. Ainsi, la grâce de Dieu doit produire une vie chrétienne complète.

- Ces mots : dans le siècle présent, qui représentent un temps si court, si incertain et si corrompu, font un contraste frappant avec l'attente signalée à 2.13.
