Quand ils vous diront : ils, la masse du peuple (comparez 2.6) ; vous, les fidèles.

Ceux qui évoquent les morts... Citation de Deutéronome 18.10-11, où Moïse énumère et condamne toutes les espèces de divination. Le terme hébreu traduit par ceux qui évoquent... désigne proprement une outre ; de là, le ventre de l'évocateur, dans lequel était censé habiter l'esprit du mort, puis cet esprit lui-même, ou aussi l'homme par lequel il parlait (1Samuel 28.7-8).

Devins. L'hébreu signifie ceux qui savent et désigne soit les esprits, soit ceux qui les faisaient parler.

Qui marmottent. La ventriloquie jouait un grand rôle dans ces sortes de cérémonies. Les évocateurs s'efforçaient d'imiter la voix faible et sourde que l'on attribuait aux morts (vox exigua des ombres, dans Virgile, Enéide VI, 493).
