Zacharie 10.10

Ainsi je les ramènerai du pays d'Egypte, je les rassemblerai d'Assyrie, je les ferai venir au pays de Galaad, et au Liban, et il n'y aura point [assez d'espace] pour eux.

De la terre d'Egypte..., d'Assyrie. Ce passage est l'un de ceux sur lesquels appuient le plus ceux qui placent la composition de cette prophétie avant la destruction du royaume des dix tribus. En effet, les prophètes de ce temps mentionnent souvent ces deux contrées comme celles d'où l'Eternel retirera son peuple (Osée 11.11 ; Esaïe 27.13). Sans doute, l'Egypte ne peut être nommée dans ces passages que comme type permanent de la maison de servitude (Osée 9.3) ; et sous ce rapport, son nom peut figurer à toutes les époques de la prophétie pour désigner un état de captivité. Mais il n'en est pas ainsi de l'Assyrie ; c'était vers la fin du royaume des dix tribus le grand pays à citer comme terre de déportation, tandis qu 'après le temps de l'exil, c'est plutôt de la Babylonie qu'un prophète semblait devoir parler. Cependant même à l'époque de Zacharie, on pouvait fort bien citer encore l'Assyrie comme terre d'exil, puisque la grande majorité du peuple des dix tribus, (c'est de lui surtout qu'il est question dans notre passage), n'était point revenue de la captivité assyrienne, tandis que l'édit de Cyrus avait de fait mis fin à l'exil babylonien.

Galaad... Liban. Ces deux localités sont choisies comme représentant les deux contrées appartenant aux dix tribus, situées des deux côtés du Jourdain.

Mer de détresse. Cette expression nous reporte au moment de la sortie d'Egypte, lorsque Israël, enfermé entre l'armée de Pharaon et la mer Rouge, se croyait déjà perdu (Exode 14.10).

Il frappera les flots. Israël est représenté comme frappant lui-même les flots du grand fleuve, le Nil (le fleuve), c'est-à-dire qu'il renversera sans peine tous les obstacles qui pourraient s'opposer à son rétablissement final. Ces obstacles sont figurés par les deux puissances qui l'avaient opprimé dans le passé : l'Egypte et l'Assyrie. L'ancienne Egypte et l'ancienne Assyrie, en vertu de ce qu'elles ont été dans le passé, servent à désigner la puissance dont Dieu affranchira son peuple à l'époque de la délivrance décrite par le prophète.
