En effet, les prophètes de ce temps mentionnent souvent ces deux contrées comme celles d'où l'Eternel retirera son peuple (Osée 11.11 ; Esaïe 27.13). Sans doute, l'Egypte ne peut être nommée dans ces passages que comme type permanent de la maison de servitude (Osée 9.3) ; et sous ce rapport, son nom peut figurer à toutes les époques de la prophétie pour désigner un état de captivité. Cette expression nous reporte au moment de la sortie d'Egypte, lorsque Israël, enfermé entre l'armée de Pharaon et la mer Rouge, se croyait déjà perdu (Exode 14.10).Il frappera les flots. Israël est représenté comme frappant lui-même les flots du grand fleuve, le Nil (le fleuve), c'est-à-dire qu'il renversera sans peine tous les obstacles qui pourraient s'opposer à son rétablissement final. Ces obstacles sont figurés par les deux puissances qui l'avaient opprimé dans le passé : l'Egypte et l'Assyrie.
