Par la sagesse de Dieu, il ne faut pas entendre sa vérité révélée dans l'Evangile, puisque la folie de la prédication, autre moyen auquel il a eu recours, est précisément l'Evangile ; mais plutôt sa sagesse manifestée dans la nature et dans la conscience de l'homme ; (Romains 1.19,20 ; 2.15) or, dans cette sagesse-là, dans cette sphère où elle était manifeste aux yeux de tous, le monde n'a pas connu Dieu par le moyen de la sagesse, c'est-à-dire de sa philosophie, de ses facultés naturelles, de toutes ses recherches.
Et à cause de cela, il a plu à Dieu de confondre cette sagesse humaine par une prédication qui lui paraît une folie, mais par laquelle les croyants sont sauvés.
"Il eût été légitimement dans l'ordre que l'homme, contemplant Dieu dans ses ouvrages, fût parvenu à sa connaissance au moyen de la sagesse dont Dieu l'avait doué ; mais, puisque cet ordre a été renversé par la corruption de la nature humaine, Dieu veut rendre l'homme fou avant de le rendre sage à salut. L'homme a mérité, par son ingratitude, ce renversement de l'ordre, et il faut que Dieu prenne une autre voie pour l'instruire." Calvin.
