Quel tableau d'une Eglise chrétienne, malgré les souillures qui se cachaient dans son sein ! Telle était encore la grande majorité de ses membres.

Que l'on compare ce langage avec celui que l'apôtre tenait aux Galates, (Galates 1.6-8 ; 3.1) chez lesquels l'erreur avait rendu douteuse la continuation de leur communion avec le Sauveur !

Et ce n'est pas l'habileté qui conduit ici la plume de l'apôtre, pour préparer les voies à ses sévères réprehensions (cette supposition est indigne de son caractère, et plus encore de la Parole de Dieu !) mais c'est l'amour, qui toujours reconnaît le bien, même lorsqu'il est mélangé, qui s'en réjouit et qui, avant tout, en donne la gloire complètement à Dieu ; (verset 4) après la grâce de Dieu en Jésus-Christ, (verset 4) source de tous les autres dons, ce que saint Paul relève surtout chez les Corinthiens, c'est la parole, la doctrine enseignée, la vérité objective et la connaissance, l'intelligence qu'ils ont de cette doctrine, pour autant qu'elle a réellement pénétré dans les âmes
