Quand nous avons à "éprouver les esprits," voici le signe certain auquel nous discernerons l'esprit de la vérité et l'esprit de l'erreur : ceux qui ont le second, sont du monde et se trahissent par leur langage.

Ils parlent comme étant du monde, c'est-à-dire que, tout en prétendant avoir la vérité de Dieu, ils la proposent dans un esprit et sous des formes qui plaisent au monde, et c'est pour cela que le monde les écoute. Et cela même est un nouveau piège pour les enfants de Dieu, trop souvent tentés de voir dans le succès un signe de vérité.

Jean relève donc l'opposition irréductible qu'il y a entre l'esprit du monde et l'esprit de Dieu, entre le langage des faux docteurs qui recueille l'approbation du monde et le témoignage des chrétiens qui n'est reçu que par celui qui obéit à Dieu : Qui connaît Dieu nous écoute, qui n'est point de Dieu ne nous écoute pas. Et cette opposition, le Maître l'a exprimée aussi vivement que le disciple. (Jean 3.31 ; 8.23,47 ; 10.2-5 ; 18.37)

Quiconque donc veut l'affaiblir, l'effacer par un enseignement qui flatte les penchants du monde, n'a pas l'esprit de la vérité, mais l'esprit de l'erreur (grec de l'égarement).
