Esaïe 8.12,13, cité d'après les Septante, qui portent : "Ne craignez point sa crainte (du peuple) et ne soyez point troublés ; le Seigneur des armées (Zebaoth), lui, sanctifiez-le, et lui sera votre crainte."

Au lieu des mots : le Seigneur Zebaoth, l'apôtre écrit, selon le texte reçu : "le Seigneur Dieu," et selon une variante (Sin., B. A, C :, versions) : "le Seigneur Christ."

Puis à ces mots : sanctifiez-le, il ajoute : dans vos cœurs. Admirable contraste ! Pour ne point les craindre, craignez le Seigneur !

Je crains Dieu, cher Abner, et n'ai point d'autre crainte.

Mais au lieu de dire seulement : craignez le Seigneur, l'apôtre, comme le prophète qu'il cite, exprime la même pensée par ce mot plus énergique encore : sanctifiez-le dans vos cœurs, c'està-dire redoutez-le, adorez-le comme le saint, et ne l'associez dans votre cœur à aucune pensée, à aucun sentiment mauvais.

La citation (verset 14) porte dans l'original : ne craignez point leur crainte.

Leur crainte peut s'entendre de la crainte qu'ils éprouvent eux-mêmes ou de la crainte qu'ils inspirent. La première signification est bien celle du passage dans Esaïe, mais la seconde est évidemment celle que Pierre veut exprimer : "Ne redoutez pas leurs menaces" (Oltramare) ; "n'ayez d'eux aucune espèce de crainte." (Stapfer)

Grec : prêts pour l'apologie (de l'Evangile de votre foi, Philippiens 1.7,17 ; Actes 26.2).

Le chrétien le plus simple peut et doit être toujours prêt, non pas sans doute à établir la vérité historique des faits évangéliques, ou à réfuter toutes les objections que l'incrédulité peut opposer à sa foi ; mais (grec) prêt pour l'apologie, ou la défense, envers quiconque lui demande raison de son espérance, prêt à dire sur quoi et sur qui elle se fonde, et à montrer les fruits de paix et de joie dont elle est pour lui la source.

Il suffit pour cela de connaître le Sauveur par sa Parole, et d'avoir éprouvé dans son cœur la puissance régénératrice de sa grâce. Et le plus souvent un tel témoignage, simple, sérieux, fondé uniquement sur une vivante expérience, rendu, comme le veut l'apôtre, avec douceur et modestie, se trouvera être l'apologie la plus vraie, la plus puissante, la plus persuasive de l'Évangile.

- Grec : avec douceur et crainte.

Ce dernier mot ne désigne pas, comme le pensent Calvin et plusieurs interprètes récents, la crainte de Dieu. La plupart de nos versions le traduisent par respect ; ce serait la déférence envers ceux qui demandent compte de la foi, qu'ils soient des hommes sincères désireux de s'instruire, ou des juges siégeant dans les tribunaux, devant lesquels les premiers chrétiens étaient souvent appelés. (Comparer verset 16)

Mais le terme grec ne signifie pas proprement respect. Il faut l'entendre de cette crainte qui est de l'humilité, de la modestie, l'absence de toute présomption, de toute fausse confiance. (Philippiens 2.12 ; 2Corinthiens 7.15 ; Ephésiens 6.5)
