Cet adversaire fut le plus important des trois. Aussi l'historien nous donne-t-il sur son compte des renseignements beaucoup plus détaillés. Les mots se révolta sont le sommaire et une anticipation de toute l'histoire subséquente.

Ephrathien, delà tribu d'Ephraïm.

Tséréda : localité dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, aujourd'hui peut-être le petit village de Sarda-hin, au nord-est de Béthel.

En communiquant la raison pour laquelle Dieu déchira le royaume d'Israël, Akhija avertit Jéroboam, afin qu'il se garde de tomber dans le péché, lors de sa montée sur le trône.

Malgré le démantèlement du pays, la maison de David ne devait pas s'éteindre : c'est d'elle que le Messie devait provenir ! Salomon chercha à tuer son successeur : le roi lui-même n'avait-il enseigné à son peuple, que les intentions du cœur humain ne peuvent contrecarrer les voies divines ? Salomon pensait, malgré tout, pouvoir imposer sa volonté ! Jéroboam se retira alors en Égypte, content de vivre durant un certain temps, dans l'exil et la discrétion, ayant l'assurance de recevoir plus tard, enfin son royaume. Ne devrions-nous pas nous réjouir de savoir qu'un meilleur royaume nous est réservé, en Jésus-Christ ?
