Ils prophétisèrent, poussant des sons rauques qui passaient pour des oracles ou des prières, comme font aujourd'hui les derviches-hurleurs.

L'oblation : l'holocauste quotidien de l'après-midi, accompagné d'une offrande non sanglante (Exode 29.38 et suivants ; Nombres 28.3-8) ; c'était l'heure où le soleil commençait à s'abaisser vers l'horizon. Les prophètes de Baal avaient donc eu à leur disposition la plus grande partie de la journée. Cette remarque est en même temps destinée à montrer que, dans l'intention d'Elie, le culte extraordinaire qu'il allait offrir, quoique éloigné localement du temple, était spirituellement un avec le culte théocratique central ; voir encore verset 36.
