World English Bible He served Baal, and worshiped him, and provoked to anger Yahweh, the God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.

Cumulant l'idolâtrie grossière de ses anciens prédécesseurs avec celle de ses parents, il autorise publiquement le culte des veaux d'or et en même temps pratique personnellement l'idolâtrie proprement dite, le culte syrien de Baal.

Note historique.

C'est avec l'avènement de la famille d'Omri sur le trône d'Israël que commence la mention de ce petit royaume dans les inscriptions assyriennes. Vers l'an 1060 avant J-C, les Assyriens avaient été battus près de Carkémis, sur l'Euphrate, par les armées des rois de Syrie, à la tête desquels se trouvaient les Héthiens. Ce désastre, qui fut suivi d'une dissolution complète de l'ancien empire d'Assyrie par la révolte contre Ninive de la Babylonie, de la Mésopotamie et de l'Arménie, procura un temps de relâche aux peuples de l'Asie occidentale. C'est là la raison pour laquelle David et Salomon purent jouir d'une entière sécurité de ce côté-là et étendre leur puissance comme ils le firent. Mais bientôt, l'empire assyrien se releva de cette chute et redevint redoutable aux peuples de la Syrie et de la Palestine. Dans une inscription retrouvée sur un obélisque dressé par Salmanasar l'ancien sont mentionnés les rois de Damas Hadad-ldri (Hadadé-zer) et Hazaël (comparez 2Rois 8.15). Dans la même inscription, il est parlé du tribut payé par Jaua (Jéhu), fils de Hu-um-ri (Omri). Le terme de fils désigne ici un successeur. La dénomination habituelle du pays des dix tribus dans les inscriptions assyriennes est Mat-beth-Humri : pays de la maison d'Omri. Ce roi avait acquis une célébrité particulière par la raison qu'il avait été le fondateur de Samarie. Dans une liste énumérant les tributs payés au roi assyrien Rammidamar, sont mentionnés les pays suivants : Surra (Tyr), Sidannu (Sidon). Mat-Humri (le pays d'Omri), Udumu (Edom) et Palastav (Philistie). La ville de Samarie est ordinairement nommée Samirina. Dès ce moment nous aurons fréquemment à citer des inscriptions assyriennes mentionnant les rois et le pays des dix tribus. L'inscription la plus remarquable est celle qui a été découverte sur les bords du Tigre, où Salmanasar 2 parle d'Aha-ab-bu Sirlaï (Achab d'Israël) en ces termes :
Je brûlai Karkar ; je détruisis 1200 chars, 1200 cavaliers et 20000 hommes de Dad-Idri (Hadadézer) de Damas ; 700 chars, 700 cavaliers, 10000 hommes d'Irchulin de Hamath ; 2000 chars, 10000 hommes d'Achab d'Israël (Aha-ab-bu, mat Sir-la-ai) ; 500 hommes de Guäer ; 1000 hommes de Musri (Mitsraïm, Egypte) ;... 100 hommes de Bahsa d'Ammon. Ces 12 rois s'étaient avancés pour me livrer bataille ; par le secours puissant de mon Seigneur Assur, avec la force irrésistible que m'accorda le grand protecteur qui marche devant moi, je combattis avec eux, je leur tuai 14000 hommes ; j'en remplis la surface des eaux et répandis leurs cadavres sur la plaine.

      1 The angel of Yahweh came up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, "I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you:
      2 and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.' But you have not listened to my voice: why have you done this?
