Anne au sanctuaire de Silo

A Rama, dans la région montagneuse d’Éfraïm, vivait un Éfraïmite, du district de Souf, appelé Elcana ; il était fils de Yeroam, lui-même fils d’Élihou, petit-fils de Tohou et arrière-petit-fils de Souf.

Il avait épousé deux femmes, Anne et Peninna ; Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n’en avait pas.
3
Chaque année, Elcana se rendait de Rama au sanctuaire de Silo pour y adorer le Seigneur, le Dieu de l’univers, et lui offrir un sacrifice. Les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, étaient prêtres du Seigneur à Silo.

Elcana avait l’habitude de donner à Peninna et à chacun de ses enfants un morceau de l’animal sacrifié ;
5
mais à Anne, il donnait une part de choix, car il l’aimait beaucoup, bien que le Seigneur ne lui ait pas accordé d’enfants.

Quant à Peninna, l’autre femme, elle cherchait sans cesse à vexer Anne pour l’humilier de n’avoir pas d’enfant.

Et chaque année, lorsque Anne se rendait au sanctuaire du Seigneur, la même scène se répétait. Une année, comme Anne se mettait à pleurer et ne voulait rien manger,

son mari lui demanda : « Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu ? Pourquoi ne veux-tu rien manger ? Pourquoi es-tu si triste ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils ? »

Après que l’on eut mangé et bu aux abords du sanctuaire de Silo, Anne se leva. Le prêtre Héli était assis près du montant de la porte.

Anne était très affligée. Tout en pleurs, elle pria le Seigneur
11
en prononçant cette promesse : « Seigneur, Dieu de l’univers, vois combien je suis malheureuse ! Ne m’oublie pas, aie pitié de moi ! Donne-moi un fils, je m’engage à le consacrer pour toujours à ton service ; ses cheveux ne seront jamais coupés. »

Anne pria longuement. Héli l’observait,

il voyait ses lèvres remuer, mais n’entendait aucun son, car elle priait intérieurement. Héli pensa qu’elle était ivre

et lui dit : « Resteras-tu encore longtemps dans cet état ? Va faire passer ton ivresse ailleurs ! » –
15
« Non, je ne suis pas ivre, répondit Anne. Je suis une femme malheureuse, mais je n’ai pas bu. Je suis ici pour confier ma peine au Seigneur.
16
Ne me considère pas comme une femme de rien. Si j’ai prié aussi longtemps, c’est parce que mon cœur débordait de chagrin et d’humiliation. »
17
Alors Héli déclara : « Va en paix. Et que le Dieu d’Israël t’accorde ce que tu lui as demandé. » –
18
« Et toi, répondit-elle, garde-moi ta bienveillance. » Anne s’en alla et accepta de manger. La tristesse avait disparu de son visage.
Naissance et enfance de Samuel

Tôt le lendemain matin, Elcana et sa famille allèrent se prosterner devant le Seigneur, puis ils retournèrent chez eux, à Rama. Elcana s’unit à sa femme Anne, et le Seigneur exauça la prière de celle-ci.
20
Anne devint enceinte, puis mit au monde un fils. Alors elle déclara : « Puisque je l’ai demandé au Seigneur, je lui donne le nom de Samuel. »
21
Par la suite, Elcana se rendit de nouveau à Silo avec sa famille pour y offrir au Seigneur le sacrifice annuel et un sacrifice particulier qu’il avait promis.
22
Mais cette fois, Anne n’alla pas avec son mari. Voici ce qu’elle lui avait expliqué : « J’attends que l’enfant soit sevré ; alors je l’amènerai à Silo, je le présenterai devant le Seigneur, et il restera là pour toujours. »

Elcana avait répondu : « C’est bien ! Puisque tu le juges bon, reste ici avec lui jusqu’à ce qu’il soit sevré. Que le Seigneur réalise sa promesse. » Anne était donc restée à Rama pour allaiter son fils.
24
Lorsqu’elle l’eut sevré, et bien qu’il fût encore tout jeune, elle l’emmena au sanctuaire du Seigneur à Silo. Elle et son mari avaient pris un taureau de trois ans, un sac de farine et une outre de vin.
25
Ils offrirent le taureau en sacrifice, puis ils conduisirent l’enfant auprès d’Héli.
26
Anne dit à Héli : « Te souviens-tu de cette femme qui se tenait un jour ici, non loin de toi, pour prier le Seigneur ? Aussi vrai que tu es vivant, c’était moi.
27
C’est pour obtenir cet enfant que je priais. Le Seigneur me l’a donné.
28
A mon tour, je veux le donner au Seigneur ; pour toute sa vie, il appartiendra au Seigneur. » Alors Samuel se prosterna devant le Seigneur.
Anne au sanctuaire de Silo

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:

and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3
This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.
4
When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.
6
Her rival provoked her severely, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.
7
As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and didn't eat.
8
Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why don't you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"
9
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh's temple.

She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept bitterly.
11
She vowed a vow, and said, "Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head."
12
It happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli saw her mouth.
13
Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14
Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you."
15
Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.
16
Don't count your handmaid for a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation."
17
Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him."
18
She said, "Let your handmaid find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more.
Naissance et enfance de Samuel
19
They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.
20
It happened, when the time had come, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of Yahweh."
21
The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
22
But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever."
23
Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word." So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.
24
When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to Yahweh's house in Shiloh. The child was young.
25
They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
26
She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.
27
For this child I prayed; and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.
28
Therefore also I have granted him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is granted to Yahweh." He worshiped Yahweh there.
