On est étonné de voir figurer ici l'Urim, car Abiathar, fils du souverain sacrificateur, qui l'avait emporté avec l'éphod, était auprès de David. Il est probable que Saül, ne pouvant se passer d'un souverain sacrificateur et d'un moyen de consulter l'Eternel, avait institué un souverain sacrificateur choisi dans la branche aînée, celle d'Eléazar, qui dès longtemps avait été mise de côté, nous ignorons pour quelle raison, et avait fait place à la branche cadette, celle d'Ithamar (voir à 1Samuel 2.32). Ce sacrificateur avait dû se pourvoir d'un moyen de divination semblable à celui du sacrificateur légitime.
