La puissance est celle de l'Esprit-Saint même. (comme 1Corinthiens 2.4,5) Cette puissance divine a agi, à la fois dans la prédication de l'apôtre et dans le cœur de ses auditeurs, de manière à produire en ceux-ci cette pleine certitude de persuasion : tel est le sens du mot grec que nous traduisons par pleine certitude, mais dont aucune expression de notre langue ne peut rendre toute la force.

Ce terme se retrouve comme épithète de l'intelligence, (Colossiens 2.2) de l'espérance, (Hébreux 6.11) de la foi. (Hébreux 10.22) Il ne faut pas l'entendre, dans notre passage, de preuves miraculeuses auxquelles l'apôtre ferait allusion.

Paul en appelle au témoignage de ses auditeurs eux-mêmes, pour les affermir par le souvenir de ce que fut son ministère au milieu d'eux. Ces dons que Dieu lui avait accordés n'étaient pas destinés à glorifier l'apôtre, comme aussi ce n'est pas pour en tirer vanité qu'il les rappelle. Je les ai reçus, dit-il, à cause de vous, pour le salut de vos âmes. (Comparer 2Corinthiens 4.15 ; 8.9)
