Nos versions ordinaires (Calvin, Luther) traduisent : "leurs femmes" et entendent ainsi les femmes des diacres, auxquels l'apôtres revient ensuite. (1Timothée 3.12)

Ce sens est d'autant plus admissible que très probablement les femmes des diacres assistaient leurs maris dans le soin des pauvres, surtout des personnes de leur sexe.

Les Pères de l'Eglise, et quelques exégètes modernes, pensent que l'apôtre parle ici des diaconesses proprement dites (Romains 16.1) et en donnent pour raison :

1° que Paul ne dit par leurs femmes ;

2° que ces exhortations ne concernent que des personnes exerçant des charges dans l'Eglise ;

3° cette recommandation d'être fidèles en toutes choses, c'est-à-dire dans leurs devoirs spéciaux.

Médisantes serait mieux rendu par calomniatrices ; sobres pourrait se traduire par vigilantes. (1Timothée 3.2, note.)
