Ne laisse pas en friche le don spirituel que tu possèdes et qui t’a été donné en vertu d’indications prophétiques, lorsque les responsables t’ont imposé les mains.

Grec : "du presbytère" ou corps des presbytres, c'est-à-dire des anciens. Ce mot n'est employé dans ce sens en aucun autre passage. Ailleurs il signifie le sanhédrin juif. (Luc 22.66 ; Actes 22.5)

- C'était Paul lui-même qui avait choisi Timothée pour son compagnon d'œuvre, qui l'avait introduit dans sa charge. (Actes 16.1-3) Et cependant il avait voulu que cette charge fût confirmée par l'imposition des mains des anciens, probablement à Lystre même d'où partit le jeune disciple.

La tradition désigne toutefois Ephèse comme le lieu où s'accomplit cette cérémonie. Il faudrait la placer alors plus tard, quand Timothée, remplaçant Paul, fut appelé à occuper une position plus indépendante. Les représentants de l'Eglise, se joignant à l'apôtre, (2Timothée 1.6) consacrèrent Timothée au service du Seigneur et implorèrent sur lui, par ce même acte, la bénédiction de Dieu.

Paul lui-même, appelé directement par le Seigneur, avait reçu à Antioche l'imposition des mains pour sa première mission parmi les païens. (Actes 13.3)

D'où il résulte clairement que, si l'institution du ministère évangélique repose sur l'autorité de Jésus-Christ qui l'a établi, (Ephésiens 4.11) et si les dons qui y rendent propre viennent de Dieu seul, la charge en est conférée par l'Eglise. Le Nouveau Testament entier prouve jusqu'à l'évidence que tout gouvernement et toute autorité au sein de l'Eglise sont dans les mains de l'Eglise elle-même.
