8 à 13 Chusaï veut gagner du temps pour sauver David ; il allègue contre le conseil d'Ahithophel trois motifs : l'extrême irritation et la bravoure désespérée que déploieront les compagnons de David ; la probabilité que David échappera dans la nuit parce qu'il se tiendra à l'écart de sa troupe, et l'effet déplorable que ne manquerait pas de produire le moindre échec au début de la campagne. On remarquera le ton d'emphase intentionnel qui règne dans tout ce discours.
