Ce n'était pas seulement David, c'était tout le peuple dont le cœur s'était enorgueilli. David voulait prendre les allures des monarques d'alentour, et le peuple de son côté commençait à s'envisager comme une des nations de la terre. C'est la raison pour laquelle la punition frappe le peuple lui-même aussi bien que le roi.Il incita... Les Chroniques attribuent cette incitation à Satan (1Chroniques 21.1). Il n'y a pas de contradiction. Dieu, voulant humilier le roi et le peuple se servit d'une mauvaise pensée suggérée au premier par l'esprit malin. On peut comparer à certains égards la tentation de Job (chapitres 1 et 2), dans laquelle Satan agit sous le bon plaisir de la volonté divine. Jésus, dans l'oraison dominicale, nous ordonné de demander à Dieu de ne pas nous induire en tentation, mais plutôt de nous délivrer du Malin ; il pense certainement, non à des pièges que Dieu nous tendrait, mais à ceux que le diable tend continuellement sous nos pas et dans lesquels nous devons demander à Dieu de ne pas nous faire tomber ensuite de quelque mauvaise disposition de notre cœur.Contre eux : en lui faisant faire une chose qui devait attirer un jugement sur Israël. Cet exemple met en lumière la manière dont Dieu gouverne le monde, et ce texte nous fournit une leçon intéressante. L'orgueil du cœur de David était révélé par son péché : vouloir dénombrer le peuple d'Israël. Le roi pensait paraître aux yeux de tous, comme étant le plus grand, faisant davantage confiance en son « bras de chair », qu'en la force de Celui qui l'avait créé, malgré tout ce qu'il avait préalablement écrit sur son absolue confiance en Dieu. Dieu ne juge pas le péché comme nous pourrions le faire.Ce qui peut nous paraître inoffensif, ou du moins, une bagatelle, peut être un grand péché aux yeux de Dieu, qui discerne les pensées et les intentions du cœur.Même les impies peuvent déceler la méchanceté des hommes, une mauvaise conduite éventuelle des croyants, qui peut passer, chez ces derniers, complètement inaperçue. Mais Dieu permet rarement à ceux qu'Il aime, de se complaire dans la convoitise de leur péché.
