Les païens comprenant, par la dernière parole de l'apôtre, qu'ils pouvaient être sauvés par la foi seule, malgré l'opposition des Juifs, étaient dans la joie.

Et ils témoignaient cette joie en glorifiant la parole du Seigneur. Ils la glorifiaient, soit en la recevant dans leur cœur avec toujours plus de décision, soit en exprimant tout haut leur reconnaissance.

Les païens ne crurent pas tous, mais (grec) autant (d'entre eux) qui étaient destinés (littéralement ordonnés) à la vie éternelle.

Celui qui les avait ordonnés (placés dans cet ordre), c'est Dieu, par sa grâce souveraine, et en leur donnant l'Esprit d'adoption. (Romains 8.15)

Telle est la cause pour laquelle ils crurent, se confièrent en Jésus, le Sauveur que Paul annonçait. Ils auraient pu résister comme d'autres, car l'action de Dieu n'anéantit nullement la liberté de l'homme, "Il ne force personne, mais il fait qu'on veut."

Ce récit de Luc est en parfaite harmonie avec la pensée de Paul, exprimée souvent ailleurs par un autre terme plus précis encore. (Romains 8.29 ; Ephésiens 1.5)

- Les commentateurs ont souvent torturé ce texte dans un intérêt dogmatique.

Tandis que Calvin y voit la doctrine d'un décret absolu, d'autres s'efforcent de diminuer l'action de Dieu pour élever celle de l'homme, qui, en dernier résultat, se destinerait lui-même à la vie éternelle.

Oltramare traduit : "Ceux qui étaient disposés pour la vie éternelle, crurent."

Pour cela, il faut faire taire la conscience exégétique.

La plupart des traducteurs et des interprètes récents, même parmi les luthériens, préfèrent laisser le texte dire ce qu'il dit.
