Ajoutées "à l'Eglise," comme disent la plupart de nos versions ; mais ce mot n'est pas dans le texte. (comparez verset 47, note)

Le petit troupeau de croyants qui existait avant la Pentecôte s'accrut de ces trois mille âmes. Quelle riche moisson, fruit d'une seule prédication sous la puissance du Saint-Esprit !

- Les premiers mots du verset ont été traduits de trois manières différentes :

1° Ceux donc qui reçurent,...ce qui signifie que ce ne furent pas tous les auditeurs. Ainsi traduisent toutes nos versions, depuis Calvin, Luther, la Vulgate.

2° Eux donc, ayant reçu...Ainsi tous ceux qui sont désignés au verset 37 seraient devenus croyants et auraient reçu le baptême. (Comparer Actes 1.6 ; 8.4,25, etc., où se trouve la même tournure.) Telle est l'interprétation de De Wette, Wendt, Holtzmann, Meyer.

3° Les uns ayant reçu,...tandis que d'autres, qui sont sousentendus, n'auraient pas cru. Il nous paraît que la seconde de ces versions est la plus conforme au style de Luc.

- Le texte reçu porte : qui reçurent de bon cœur ou avec joie la parole. Ce mot, qui s'entend de soi-même, a été ajouté pour rendre la description plus complète.

- Les trois mille croyants ne furent pas tous baptisés à l'instant, ce qui n'eut pas été possible.

L'expression : ils furent ajoutés ce jour-là, n'implique pas nécessairement que leur baptême ait été célébré ce même jour. Une instruction complète leur fut donnée plus tard. (verset 42)
