Actes 24.17

Après avoir repoussé les accusations de ses adversaires et confessé sa foi, l'apôtre rappelle les circonstances de son arrestation, (Actes 21.26 et suivants) afin de montrer, par le but même de sa venue à Jérusalem combien cette arrestation était injuste.

Il y revenait, après plusieurs années d'absence ; quatre années s'étaient écoulées depuis sa dernière courte apparition dans cette ville. (Actes 18.22)

Et quel était le but de sa venue ? Un grand bienfait pour sa nation : apporter aux chrétiens pauvres de la Judée des aumônes ; il s'agit de la riche collecte qu'il avait faite parmi les païens convertis de la Macédoine et de la Grèce (1Corinthiens 16.1 et suivants, 2Corinthiens 8.1 et suivants ; Romains 15.25 et suivants), et qui n'est pas mentionnée ailleurs dans le livre des Actes.

On peut trouver étrange que l'apôtre présente comme destinés à sa nation une collecte qu'il apportait à l'Eglise de Jérusalem. Mais bien des indices montrent que celle ci n'était encore que très incomplètement séparée de la nation juive, (Actes 21.20) et il est probable que plus d'un juif indigent eut part aux aumônes que Paul apportait.

Quant aux offrandes, dont parle Paul, ce ne sont pas des présents faits à des hommes, mais des sacrifices offerts à Dieu dans le temple. (Comparer Actes 21.26)

Les sacrifices mentionnés dans ce dernier passage n'étaient pas le but de la visite de Paul à Jérusalem, puisqu'il ne fut amené à les offrir que par la proposition des anciens réunis chez Jacques ; (Actes 21.18-26) mais comme il est dit que l'apôtre "avait hâte d'être le jour de la Pentecôte à Jérusalem," (Actes 20.16) on peut supposer qu'il désirait célébrer cette fête avec son peuple en participant au culte dans le temple.

      17 Now after some years, I came to bring gifts for the needy to my nation, and offerings;

      25 But now, I say, I am going to Jerusalem, serving the saints.
      26 For it has been the good pleasure of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are at Jerusalem.
      27 Yes, it has been their good pleasure, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, they owe it to them also to serve them in fleshly things.
      28 When therefore I have accomplished this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will go on by way of you to Spain.
      31 that I may be delivered from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints;

      1 Corinthiens 16

      1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I commanded the assemblies of Galatia, you do likewise.
      2 On the first day of the week, let each one of you save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.
      3 When I arrive, I will send whoever you approve with letters to carry your gracious gift to Jerusalem.
      4 If it is appropriate for me to go also, they will go with me.

      2 Corinthiens 8

      1 Moreover, brothers, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia;
      2 how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality.
      3 For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord,
      4 begging us with much entreaty to receive this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints.
      9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.

      2 Corinthiens 9

      1 It is indeed unnecessary for me to write to you concerning the service to the saints,
      2 for I know your readiness, of which I boast on your behalf to them of Macedonia, that Achaia has been prepared for a year past. Your zeal has stirred up very many of them.
      12 For this service of giving that you perform not only makes up for lack among the saints, but abounds also through many givings of thanks to God;

      Galates 2

      10 They only asked us to remember the poor--which very thing I was also zealous to do.
