World English Bible God's temple that is in heaven was opened, and the ark of the Lord's covenant was seen in his temple. Lightnings, sounds, thunders, an earthquake, and great hail followed.

Plusieurs interprètes rattachent verset 19 à Apocalypse 12, estimant que les phénomènes décrits introduisent la vision suivante. Cependant on peut le considérer aussi comme une conclusion de la scène qui vient d'être dépeinte : au cantique de louanges qui retentit dans le ciel (versets 17,18)

Dieu répond en ouvrant le temple ; l'arche de son alliance apparaît ; et les signes de sa gloire et de sa puissance éclatent.

Ces mêmes signes avaient paru dans la vision initiale du trône ; (Apocalypse 4.5) ils se manifestent encore dans cette scène céleste destinée à inaugurer une nouvelle série de visions.

Quoi qu'il en soit, le sens de ces symboles est clair : le temple ouvert signifie que le saint des saints est accessible et que Dieu va agir avec puissance ; l'arche de l'alliance, redevenue visible, annonce le règne du Messie ( 2.1-8) et l'accomplissement des promesses de l'alliance, les éclairs, les tonnerres, le tremblement de terre sont les signes précurseurs du jugement dernier.
