1 à 7 Inauguration de la statue d'or érigée par Nébucadnetsar dans la plaine de Dura.

Statue d'or. Le mot tselem désigne ici, comme dans 2.31, une statue de forme humaine, et les versets 12,14,18 paraissent indiquer qu'elle représentait la puissance de l'empire babylonien personnifiée dans la divinité suprême de la nation, le dieu Bel.

D'or, c'est-à-dire, recouverte de plaques d'or ; car il n'est pas probable qu'un monument aussi colossal fût d'or massif. C'est ainsi que l'autel de bois d'acacia recouvert d'or est appelé autel d'or : Exode 37.25 ; 39.38. Ces statues d'or monumentales étaient dans les usages babyloniens. Le pillage d'une grande partie de l'Asie avait fait affluer à Babylone une masse énorme de métaux précieux.

D'une hauteur de soixante coudées et d'une largeur de six coudées. La coudée babylonienne (Ezéchiel 40.5, note) mesurait 525 millimètres ; cette statue devait donc avoir 34 mètres 50 centimètres de haut sur 3 mètres 15 centimètres de large. Ces dimensions, pour être énormes, n'ont rien d'invraisemblable, puisqu'elles sont à peine celles qu'avait le colosse de Rhodes (70 coudées) et ne dépassent pas celles des statues de Borromée au bord du lac Majeur et de la Bavaria à Munich. Il y a sans doute une disproportion choquante entre les deux chiffres indiqués (puisque les dimensions normales de hauteur et de largeur de la stature humaine sont dans le rapport de 6 à 1). Mais il est. probable qu'il faut compter dans les soixante coudées la hauteur d'un piédestal auquel on peut donner les dimensions que l'on voudra.

La plaine de Dura. Il existait plusieurs villes de ce nom. Mais ce doit être ici une localité dans le voisinage de la capitale. Or, d'après Oppert, le célèbre orientaliste, il se trouve près de l'emplacement de l'ancienne Babylone, dans la direction sud-sud-est, un fleuve et une ligne de collines portant encore le nom de Dura. La plus petite de ces collines n'est autre chose qu'un cube de briques crues, de 14 mètres à la base et de 6 mètres de hauteur. Selon Oppert, ce serait peut-être là le piédestal de la statue dont parle le livre de Daniel.

Da 3:1-7 Cette statue, d'une trentaine de mètres environ, était placée probablement sur un piédestal ; ce dernier n'était pas en or massif, il devait être vraisemblablement plaqué or.

L'orgueil et la bigoterie des hommes les astreignent à suivre leur religion, qu'elle soit bonne ou mauvaise, mais face aux intérêts du monde qui peuvent séduire, ou aux punitions qui peuvent en découler, certains résistent.

Il est facile pour les hommes négligents, sensuels et infidèles, de suivre ceux qui représentent le plus grand nombre ; la plupart de ces personnes suivront les voies qui leur sont dictées. Il n'y a rien de pire qu'une foule de négligents, conditionnés par de la musique et sous la menace d'être condamnés, en cas de désobéissance, à la fournaise ardente.

Par de telles méthodes, le culte de l'erreur a été instauré et maintenu.
