Daniel interprète le malheureux destin qui attend Belschatsar. Ce dernier n'avait pas pris au sérieux l'avertissement divin donné à Nebucadnetsar. De plus, il avait insulté Dieu.

Les pécheurs se satisfont de dieux qui ne peuvent voir, ni entendre, ni savoir ; un jour, ils seront jugés par Celui qui détient toutes choses.

Daniel a donc lu la phrase écrite sur le mur. Tout ceci peut très bien être le destin de chaque pécheur : à sa mort, les jours qu'il a vécus sont recensés ; après sa mort, il y a le jugement : il sera alors pesé dans la balance, et trouvé léger ; après le jugement, ce même pécheur sera dépouillé et donné en tant que proie, au diable et à ses anges.

Alors que les évènements de ce texte se déroulaient dans le palais, on peut supposer qu'au même moment, l'armée de Cyrus entrait dans la ville, et quand Belschatsar a été massacré, une soumission générale a suivi.

Bientôt, chaque pécheur impénitent sera confronté à la Parole de Dieu, placée devant lui, même s'il pense être « juste », comme les Pharisiens hypocrites, au temps des évangiles.
