Coup d'œil sur les chapitres 1 à 12

Avant de quitter ce premier groupe de prophéties, cherchons à en faire ressortir les idées les plus essentielles.

Deux objets principaux remplissent la pensée du prophète : le jugement d'Israël et son relèvement par le messie ; car le jugement du peuple est la condition de son salut, et le Messie est le moyen de ce salut.

Dans la première série de discours (chapitres 1 à 5) domine le premier de ces points de vue, celui du jugement ; l'idée du Messie n'y est encore qu'au second plan ; dans la seconde série (chapitres 7 à 12) l'idée du Messie devient dominante ; celle du jugement n'est plus qu'en seconde ligne. Le chapitre 6 est le centre du groupe ; il fait la transition entre les deux séries et peut, à volonté, être rattaché à l'une ou à l'autre.

Dans la première série est d'abord exposée la cause morale du jugement ; c'est le formalisme du culte marchant de pair avec l'injustice générale (chapitre 1). A ce triste tableau répond magnifiquement l'annonce du règne futur de la loi de Dieu sur toute la terre, qui forme le commencement du second discours (chapitres 2 à 4). Celui-ci renferme la description du jugement, qui consistera dans l'abaissement de toute grandeur humaine. Ce tableau aboutit à celui du relèvement de Sion par le Germe de l'Eternel. Le troisième discours (chapitre 5) retrace de nouveau les causes du jugement et le jugement lui-même, mais cette fois sans faire luire aucun rayon d'espérance ; il se termine au contraire par ces mots : La lumière sera voilée par les ténèbres.

Dans le chapitre 6, l'Eternel confirme au prophète la fatale nécessité de ce jugement qui ira jusqu'à la dévastation complète du pays et devra même se répéter. La prophétie nous fait descendre ici jusqu'au fond de l'abîme ; mais elle ouvre dans les derniers mots la perspective du relèvement.

Ce relèvement, que doit accomplir le Messie, est le sujet principal de la seconde série. Déjà, bien antérieurement à Esaïe, le personnage du Messie était connu. Il devait être de la postérité de David (2Samuel 7), et d'après quelques psaumes prophétiques participer à la gloire et à la toute-puissance de Dieu (Psaumes 110.1-7, par exemple.). Trois traits nouveaux nous paraissent distinguer les tableaux messianiques renfermés dans ces discours (chapitres 7 à 12) :

  1. La maison de David, se séparant ouvertement de l'Eternel, en la personne du roi Achaz, son représentant, devient indigne de la promesse qui lui a été faite (7.2,13,17). La promesse subsiste sans doute malgré tout ; le Messie naîtra bien encore de la race de David ; mais le prophète fait entrevoir dans cette naissance l'intervention surnaturelle d'un principe supérieur à l'humanité (7.14). A la suite de cette promesse, l'attente d'Emmanuel plane désormais sur toutes les catastrophes nationales comme la garantie de la conservation du peuple et du salut final (8.8).
  2. La réprobation (relative) dont l'Eternel vient de frapper la famille royale, est étendue à toute la Judée. Ce n'est pas dans cette contrée dominante et privilégiée, c'est dans le district le plus obscur et le plus méprisé de la Terre Sainte, dans la Galilée des Gentils, que poindra la lumière de l'apparition messianique (8.23-29.6).
  3. Pour que cette apparition ait lieu, il faudra que la maison de David elle-même ait été réduite par le jugement à un abaissement complet, tellement qu'elle sera semblable a un arbre coupé jusqu'aux racines (11.1) ; c'est alors que la vertu divine pénétrera la race d'Isaï pour en faire surgir un nouveau rejeton, supérieur au grand Roi lui-même, qui possédera la plénitude de l'Esprit et qui étendra le règne de Dieu sur la terre pacifiée et renouvelée.

Le chapitre 12 est le cantique d'actions de grâces par lequel Israël et l'humanité sauvée célèbreront cette délivrance consommée. Ainsi : Par le jugement au salut, par la mort à la vie, per crucem ad lucem, telle est la devise qui, par l'effet du péché, s'applique au peuple entier d'abord, puis à la maison de David en particulier. La dernière partie du livre d'Esaïe montrera que cette devise s'applique aussi à la personne du Messie lui-mème (chapitre 53) ; comparez Jean 12.24-26.
