World English Bible His breath is as an overflowing stream that reaches even to the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction; and a bridle that leads to ruin will be in the jaws of the peoples.

Pour vanner. Quatrième image : celle d'un van. On vanne ordinairement le grain pour en séparer la balle et garder le froment ; ici tout n'est que balle, et le résultat du vannage est la complète dispersion des ennemis (comparez 29.5).

Cinquième image : celle d'un frein qui les dompte comme on dompte un animal sauvage (comparez 37.29). L'emploi de cette image est paradoxal, comme celui de la précédente : on met un frein à l'animal pour le faire marcher droit ; ici, les païens le reçoivent pour être conduits à leur perte.
