La bible annotée Commentaire de Matthew Henry Ce verset renferme l'accomplissement des nombreuses prophéties dans lesquelles Esaïe avait annoncé qu'Assur tomberait frappé par la main de Dieu même (10.33-34 ; 18.5-6 ; 29.6-8 ; 30.31-33 ; 31.8). La catastrophe consista sans doute en une peste qui décima l'armée assyrienne (comparez le fait analogue 2Samuel 24.1-25). Cet événement, quoique accompli par des moyens naturels, n'en eut pas moins ceci de miraculeux, qu'il atteignit des proportions tout à fait extraordinaires et se produisit à la suite de la menace d'Esaïe.On a pensé qu'il y avait dans le chiffre des morts une exagération de la tradition, ou que du moins la peste avait sévi pendant un temps plus ou moins prolongé dans l'armée ; ses ravages seraient alors comparables à ceux des pestes de Milan, en 1629 (166 000 personnes), de Vienne, en 1679 (122 000), de Moscou, à la fin du siècle dernier (670 000). Mais l'action du fléau peut avoir été en cette occasion beaucoup plus rapide, comme l'indique le texte parallèle 2Rois 19.35. Comparez 2Samuel 24.15 (70 000 victimes depuis le matin jusqu'au soir) ; Exode 12.29-30 (tous les premiers-nés de l'Egypte frappés en une nuit). D'après le récit des Rois, l'événement aurait eu lieu dans la nuit même qui suivit la prophétie d'Esaïe. Cela n'est pas absolument impossible ; mais il reste alors bien peu de temps (depuis l'envoi des députés verset 9 jusqu'à la catastrophe verset 36) pour placer la bataille d'El-Théké, entre Sanchérib et les Egyptiens. Le texte d'Esaïe permet de penser qu'il s'écoula quelque temps entre la promesse verset 34 et son accomplissement versets 36 et 37. Après le combat d'El-Théké, Sanchérib put encore soumettre les Ekronites ; il allait sans doute reprendre l'offensive contre les Egyptiens, quand la perte d'une partie de son armée l'obligea à se retirer devant des forces supérieures. Les inscriptions se taisent sur cette catastrophe. Mais ce silence même rend témoignage à la vérité du récit biblique. Pourquoi, en effet, Jérusalem ne fut-elle pas conquise et Ezéchias détrôné, comme tant d'autres princes rebelles ? Pourquoi la prétendue victoire d'El-Théké ne fut-elle pas suivie de la soumission de l'Egypte ? L'événement extraordinaire raconté par la Bible explique seul toutes ces circonstances qui restent incompréhensibles d'après le récit assyrien. Ce dernier se termine, il est vrai, par la mention du tribut d'Ezéchias, dans le but évident de donner l'apparence d'un succès à l'expédition assyrienne ; mais ce n'est pas à la fin de la campagne, c'est au moment où Sanchérib était devant Lakis, qu'Ezéchias fit sa soumission (2Rois 18.14). En réalité, l'expédition se termina par un échec que les réticences du récit assyrien cherchent en vain à masquer, mais dont, en revanche, les annales égyptiennes ont conservé le souvenir sous une forme un peu différente de celle du récit biblique. Hérodote (II, 141) rapporte que dans un des temples de Memphis se trouvait une statue qui représentait le prêtre-roi Séthon tenant dans sa main une souris, et qui portait cette inscription : Que celui qui me voit craigne les dieux ! Selon Hérodote, Séthon, abandonné par la caste des guerriers, qu'il avait opprimée, invoqua son Dieu et reçut en songe la promesse de la victoire sur Sanchérib. Celui-ci se trouvait déjà avec son armée devant Péluse (à la frontière égyptienne). Pendant la nuit, son camp fut envahi par des souris qui rongèrent les courroies des armes et des boucliers ; en sorte qu'au matin les Assyriens, hors d'état de se battre, prirent la fuite en perdant beaucoup de monde. Il pourrait sans doute y avoir un fait historique au fond de cette légende égyptienne ; car on cite plusieurs traits avérés qui prouvent les ravages incroyables que les souris exercent parfois dans ces contrées. Mais une autre explication est infiniment plus probable. La souris est dans l'écriture hiéroglyphique le symbole de la destruction : Séthon s'en serait servi pour représenter la peste qui avait détruit l'armée assyrienne ; et la légende égyptienne aurait été inventée plus tard pour expliquer cette souris de Séthon, dont on ne comprenait plus le sens. La bible annotée Commentaire de Matthew Henry Ce verset renferme l'accomplissement des nombreuses prophéties dans lesquelles Esaïe avait annoncé qu'Assur tomberait frappé par la main de Dieu même (10.33-34 ; 18.5-6 ; 29.6-8 ; 30.31-33 ; 31.8). La catastrophe consista sans doute en une peste qui décima l'armée assyrienne (comparez le fait analogue 2Samuel 24.1-25). Cet événement, quoique accompli par des moyens naturels, n'en eut pas moins ceci de miraculeux, qu'il atteignit des proportions tout à fait extraordinaires et se produisit à la suite de la menace d'Esaïe.On a pensé qu'il y avait dans le chiffre des morts une exagération de la tradition, ou que du moins la peste avait sévi pendant un temps plus ou moins prolongé dans l'armée ; ses ravages seraient alors comparables à ceux des pestes de Milan, en 1629 (166 000 personnes), de Vienne, en 1679 (122 000), de Moscou, à la fin du siècle dernier (670 000). Mais l'action du fléau peut avoir été en cette occasion beaucoup plus rapide, comme l'indique le texte parallèle 2Rois 19.35. Comparez 2Samuel 24.15 (70 000 victimes depuis le matin jusqu'au soir) ; Exode 12.29-30 (tous les premiers-nés de l'Egypte frappés en une nuit). D'après le récit des Rois, l'événement aurait eu lieu dans la nuit même qui suivit la prophétie d'Esaïe. Cela n'est pas absolument impossible ; mais il reste alors bien peu de temps (depuis l'envoi des députés verset 9 jusqu'à la catastrophe verset 36) pour placer la bataille d'El-Théké, entre Sanchérib et les Egyptiens. Le texte d'Esaïe permet de penser qu'il s'écoula quelque temps entre la promesse verset 34 et son accomplissement versets 36 et 37. Après le combat d'El-Théké, Sanchérib put encore soumettre les Ekronites ; il allait sans doute reprendre l'offensive contre les Egyptiens, quand la perte d'une partie de son armée l'obligea à se retirer devant des forces supérieures. Les inscriptions se taisent sur cette catastrophe. Mais ce silence même rend témoignage à la vérité du récit biblique. Pourquoi, en effet, Jérusalem ne fut-elle pas conquise et Ezéchias détrôné, comme tant d'autres princes rebelles ? Pourquoi la prétendue victoire d'El-Théké ne fut-elle pas suivie de la soumission de l'Egypte ? L'événement extraordinaire raconté par la Bible explique seul toutes ces circonstances qui restent incompréhensibles d'après le récit assyrien. Ce dernier se termine, il est vrai, par la mention du tribut d'Ezéchias, dans le but évident de donner l'apparence d'un succès à l'expédition assyrienne ; mais ce n'est pas à la fin de la campagne, c'est au moment où Sanchérib était devant Lakis, qu'Ezéchias fit sa soumission (2Rois 18.14). En réalité, l'expédition se termina par un échec que les réticences du récit assyrien cherchent en vain à masquer, mais dont, en revanche, les annales égyptiennes ont conservé le souvenir sous une forme un peu différente de celle du récit biblique. Hérodote (II, 141) rapporte que dans un des temples de Memphis se trouvait une statue qui représentait le prêtre-roi Séthon tenant dans sa main une souris, et qui portait cette inscription : Que celui qui me voit craigne les dieux ! Selon Hérodote, Séthon, abandonné par la caste des guerriers, qu'il avait opprimée, invoqua son Dieu et reçut en songe la promesse de la victoire sur Sanchérib. Celui-ci se trouvait déjà avec son armée devant Péluse (à la frontière égyptienne). Pendant la nuit, son camp fut envahi par des souris qui rongèrent les courroies des armes et des boucliers ; en sorte qu'au matin les Assyriens, hors d'état de se battre, prirent la fuite en perdant beaucoup de monde. Il pourrait sans doute y avoir un fait historique au fond de cette légende égyptienne ; car on cite plusieurs traits avérés qui prouvent les ravages incroyables que les souris exercent parfois dans ces contrées. Mais une autre explication est infiniment plus probable. La souris est dans l'écriture hiéroglyphique le symbole de la destruction : Séthon s'en serait servi pour représenter la peste qui avait détruit l'armée assyrienne ; et la légende égyptienne aurait été inventée plus tard pour expliquer cette souris de Séthon, dont on ne comprenait plus le sens.
