Cyrus, en hĂ©breu KorĂšs. Ce nom est le mĂȘme que celui du fleuve Kur (22.6). D'aprĂšs Strabon, le conquĂ©rant se nommait dans l'origine AgradatĂšs ; il ne prit que plus tard le surnom de Cyrus. Voir encore sur ce nom l'inroduction aux chapitres 40 Ă  66.

Mon berger : pour rassembler et ramener en Canaan IsraĂ«l dispersĂ©. Cette prĂ©diction nominative de Cyrus n'a sa pareille que dans celle relative Ă  Josias (1Rois 13.2) et ne peut s'expliquer que par l'importance exceptionnelle de la mission que Dieu rĂ©servait Ă  ce monarque et dont, au dire unanime de l'antiquitĂ©, il fut digne par ses vertus. En relevant IsraĂ«l de son profond abaissement, il fut comme un Messie anticipĂ© et prĂ©para l'extension du rĂšgne de Dieu chez les gentils. Son nom, prononcĂ© d'avance par la prophĂ©tie, dut ĂȘtre, lorsque ses premiĂšres victoires le rendirent cĂ©lĂšbre, un signe pour IsraĂ«l captif, en mĂȘme temps que le moyen de disposer Cyrus lui-mĂȘme Ă  libĂ©rer le peuple de Dieu. On ne comprendrait guĂšres, en effet, sans une influence de ce genre, qu'un de ses premiers soins, aprĂšs avoir pris Babylone, eĂ»t Ă©tĂ© de renvoyer ce peuple en Palestine. Le rĂ©cit de JosĂšphe (AntiquitĂ©s XI, 1, 2) n'a donc rien que de vraisemblable ; comparez Esdras 1.2.
