Ainsi... La stupéfaction qu'a causée sa misère n'aura d'égale que celle que causera sa gloire.

Il fera tressaillir. Le sens du mot est incertain. Il signifie ordinairement faire,jaillir, sens qui ne peut guères s'appliquer ici ; quelques-uns traduisent par asperger, arroser (il purifiera les peuples par son sang expiatoire) ; le mot hébreu ne peut avoir ce sens. Nous le prenons donc dans celui de faire tressaillir, ou (plus exactement) sauter, bondir ; c'est-à-dire qu'il fera lever pour lui rendre hommage les peuples et leurs rois. Il s'agit bien évidemment des Gentils. Le serviteur, apparaissant soudain dans sa gloire, produira dans le monde païen une commotion profonde et le fera bondir d'étonnement et d'attente. Même idée 49.7 : Les rois le verront et se lèveront... Leur extrême surprise s'explique d'autant mieux que sa destinée ne leur avait pas été annoncée comme à Israël. Comparez Romains 15.24.

Fermer la bouche : le signe d'un étonnement mêlé de respect. Ils ferment la bouche et restent interdits, parce que la grandeur de ce qu'ils voient dépasse tout ce que la parole peut exprimer (Calvin). Comparez Michée 7.16 ; Job 21.5 ; 29.9 ; 39.37.
