World English Bible Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances.

Marie la prophétesse. Il est fait allusion à son don de prophétie Nombres 12.2. Marie n'est mentionnée que rarement dans le Pentateuque et n'est rappelée qu'une seule fois dans le reste de la Bible (Michée 6.4).

Le tambourin ou tambour de basque était un instrument habituellement joué par les femmes (Psaumes 68.26 ; Jérémie 31.4), qui s'en accompagnaient en dansant ; comparez Juges 11.34 et 1Samuel 18.6, où les tambourins et les danses sont employés, comme ici, pour célébrer des victoires. On voit par là qu'au chant de ce cantique se rattacha une grande fête nationale par laquelle le peuple célébra son indépendance miraculeusement obtenue.
