Ce nom, que l'on a souvent dérivé de celui de l'île de Crète (comparez Jérémie 47.4), désigne en tout cas les peuplades les plus méridionales de la Philistie, qui s'étendait le long de la Méditerranée entre cette mer et le pays de Juda. Le nom de Crétim fait allusion à un mot hébreu qui signifie : celui qui extermine. Le même jeu de mots se trouve déjà Sophonie 2.5. Peut-être cette appellation rappelle-t-elle aussi l'origine étrangère de ce peuple.Tandis que le peuple juif se relevait après le retour de l'exil et accentuait de plus en plus son caractère propre, la nationalité des Philistins s'effaçait graduellement ; elle a fini par se perdre tout à fait.
