La maison d'Israël elle-même, arrivée au terme de ses longues souffrances, reconnaît la sainte fidélité de son Dieu et jouit à jamais, dans la totalité de ses membres, de l'état parfait que crée en eux l'Esprit de Dieu.

Il faudrait être bien inexpérimenté dans l'étude de la prophétie pour ne pas comprendre que sous cette multitude de détails matériels et de figures étranges se cachent des intuitions morales saintes et sublimes qu'elle a voulu à la fois révéler et déguiser afin de les laisser deviner ; comparez Zacharie 14.20-21 et tant d'autres passages analogues. Le passage parallèle de l'Apocalypse jette une lumière sur le sens véritable de ce tableau. Israël, temporellement et spirituellement rétabli, ne forme plus qu'un seul corps avec tous les croyants de la gentilité ; c'est là le peuple de Dieu, la cité bien-aimée. Mais un reste de révolte habite encore dans le cœur de l'humanité ; il doit se manifester pour être détruit. C'est ce suprême effort du mal qui est représenté sous l'image de la lutte décrite ici par le prophète. Le jugement qui frappe Gog n'est autre que celui qui amènera la purification complète de l'univers moral et fraiera la voie au renouvellement de toutes choses. C'est donc ici le parallèle d'Esaïe 66.24 ; la nécropole mystérieuse d'Hamona, avec son colossal sépulcre, ne paraît être autre que ce lieu de condamnation, où le ver ne meurt point et où le feu ne s'éteint point, le Gué-Hinnom de la terre à jamais sanctifiée. On comprend ainsi cette antithèse : pas un seul cadavre oublié (verset 15) et pas un seul fidèle laissé en arrière (verset 28). Le triage définitif est consommé ; comparez Apocalypse 20.11-15. Ainsi le terrain est enfin déblayé pour l'apparition de l'édifice parfait, pour l'exaucement de la troisième demande de l'oraison dominicale.
