Soixante-dix hommes... Déjà du temps de Moïse il est parlé quelquefois de soixante-dix hommes appelés à représenter le peuple ; comparez Exode 24.1 ; Nombres 11.16,24. Cet usage reparaît à certains moments, jusqu'à ce qu'il devienne une institution permanente, celle du sanhédrin, après le temps des Maccabées. Dans la personne de ces septante anciens, tout le peuple est donc inculpé.

Entre tous Ezéchiel en désigne un par son nom, Jaazania, fils de Saphan. Par là il veut faire voir à quel point le venin de l'idolâtrie avait pénétré la masse du peuple. En effet, Saphan, le père de cet homme, avait été l'un des ministres du pieux roi Josias et avait travaillé avec lui a extirper l'idolâtrie (2Rois 22.3) ; Achikam, son frère, avait été le sauveur de Jérémie (Jérémie 26.24) ; et c'était un membre d'une pareille famille qui donnait l'exemple de l'infidélité à Jéhova !
