Mais maintenant, tu veux forcer ceux qui ne sont pas juifs à faire comme les Juifs ! Pourquoi donc ? »

Parole Vivante © Je voyais clairement qu’ils quittaient le droit chemin et ne marchaient plus selon la vérité enseignée par l’Évangile. J’ai alors dit ouvertement à Pierre, dans une réunion de l’Église (afin d’être entendu par tous) : « Si toi qui es juif, tu te sens libre de suivre les coutumes non juives et t’estimes dégagé des ordonnances légales du judaïsme, pourquoi veux-tu contraindre les non-Juifs convertis à respecter les coutumes juives ? »

World English Bible But when I saw that they didn't walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?

Avant l'arrivée des judaïsants, Pierre, bien que Juif de naissance, vivait à la manière des païens convertis, c'est-à-dire, qu'il mangeait avec eux (verset 12) et ne s'astreignait plus aux prescriptions de la loi. Dieu lui-même l'avait conduit dans cette voie (Actes 10) et telle avait été dès lors, on peut le supposer, sa pratique habituelle.

Mais, depuis que les envoyés de Jacques sont à Antioche, il se met à observer rigoureusement la loi : c'était proclamer que cette observation était nécessaire au salut, et obliger, moralement, par l'autorité de son exemple, les chrétiens d'Antioche, sortis du paganisme, à judaïser. Tel est le reproche de Paul. Après l'avoir exprimé, il le motive, dans les versets suivants, par l'exposition de la doctrine qu'il s'agissait de préserver intacte.
