Chapitre 5.

1 à 12 Tenez-vous fermes dans la liberté en Christ, et gardez-vous des séducteurs.

La liberté par Christ et en Christ, (Jean 8.36) la servitude sous la loi et dans toute propre justice de l'homme, voilà le contraste qui fait le mieux comprendre l'Evangile de la grâce de Dieu.

Ces paroles sont à la fois la conclusion de tout ce qui précède, (Galates 4.21-31) et une transition toute naturelle à l'exhortation suivante. (versets 2-6)

- Il y a pour ce verset diverses variantes dans les manuscrits. Le texte reçu, avec plusieurs anciens manuscrits, lit : "Dans la liberté, dans (ou par) laquelle Christ nous a affranchis, demeurez fermes." Le sens reste au fond le même.

Christ ne sera jamais le Sauveur de celui qui ne veut pas Lui appartenir, ni compter sur Lui comme son unique Sauveur.

Prêtons attention aux avertissements et aux convictions de l'apôtre : rester assidu et attaché à la doctrine et la liberté de l'Évangile. Tous les véritables chrétiens, étant enseignés par le Saint-Esprit, attendent la vie éternelle et la récompense de la Justice divine ; ils fondent leur espérance, par la foi, sur le don de Dieu : Son Fils Jésus-Christ ; ils ne basent pas leur salut sur leurs propres œuvres.

Le Juif converti peut toujours observer les lois de cérémonies, tout en affirmant rester libre ; le « Gentil », quant à lui est libre de les négliger ou de les suivre, pourvu qu'il n'en soit pas esclave.

Aucune prérogative, ni confession de foi « modèle », ne peuvent contribuer à notre acceptation par Dieu : seule une foi sincère en notre Seigneur Jésus peut le faire. La véritable foi est une grâce agissante ; elle agit par notre amour pour Dieu et pour nos frères.

Puissions-nous être du nombre de ceux qui, à travers l'Esprit, savent qu’ils sont justifiés par la foi. Sous l'ancienne alliance, la négligence de certains détails sans grande importance n’avait guère de conséquences, alors qu’aujourd’hui, nous trouvons encore certaines personnes qui restent sous le joug d’une discipline stricte et astreignante, qui régit encore beaucoup de rites et de cérémonies...

Si notre foi n’agit pas conjointement avec l’amour, toutes nos œuvres n’ont guère de poids ni de valeur.
