L'alliance de grâce qui a été faite ici est éternelle, d'une part dans le principe mais aussi avec toutes les conséquences que cela implique. Le signe de cette alliance fut la circoncision. Il est dit dans ce passage que cette alliance, faite avec Abraham et sa descendance doit être respectée. Ceux dont le Seigneur est le Dieu doivent se considérer comme Son peuple. Non seulement Abraham et sa postérité, par Isaac, furent circoncis, mais aussi Ismaël, ainsi que tous les serviteurs. Cette marque scella l'alliance avec Dieu, non seulement pour la postérité d'Isaac en ce qui concerne Canaan, mais aussi pour toute l'Église, au travers de Christ, en ce qui concerne les cieux. Le signe extérieur est concrétisé avec l'église visible ; le signe intérieur de l'Esprit Saint est réservé à ceux qui croient en Dieu, Lui seul pourra les sonder. Il a été sévèrement recommandé de respecter cette institution religieuse. Il est dangereux de connaître les institutions divines et de les négliger. L'alliance en question a été l'objet d'une grande bénédiction mondiale, pour les temps qui suivirent. Toutes les grâces et les récompenses conférées à Abraham ont été basées sur Christ. Abraham a été justifié, comme nous l'avons vu, non pas par sa droiture, mais par sa foi dans le Messie annoncé.
