Nathanaël ne repousse point la louange de Jésus ; c'est là, comme l'observe Meyer, une preuve de sa sincérité, et sa question n'est que l'expression d'un profond étonnement.

Il paraît que, peu de temps avant la rencontre de Philippe et de Nathanaël, ce dernier s'était retiré et recueilli sous un figuier près du Chemin, ou il croyait être seul et dérobé à tous les regards.

Là, lui dit Jésus, je t'ai vu.

Le regard du Sauveur, non seulement a découvert Nathanaël en un lieu où il était naturellement caché, mais il a pénétré jusqu'au fond de son cœur et a reconnu les sentiments intimes qui l'occupaient à ce moment.

C'est ce qui ressort de l'impression profonde et décisive que fait sur Nathanaël ce simple mot : je t'ai vu. Rien de moins ne saurait expliquer comment cette parole crée la foi en cet homme, et provoque la belle confession qui s'échappe de son cœur et de ses lèvres. (verset 50)
