Jésus passe, sans transition, à cette pensée nouvelle, qui est une magnifique révélation de la grâce divine. (versets 37-40) Et il est facile d'en saisir la liaison avec le verset 36 : Vous ne croyez point mais d'autres croiront ; votre incrédulité n'anéantira point les desseins de la miséricorde de Dieu.

Seulement, pour que l'homme croie véritablement, il faut que Dieu accomplisse en lui l'œuvre de sa grâce, ou, selon l'expression du texte, qu'il le donne au Sauveur, en d'autres termes, qu'il "l'attire à lui." (verset 44)

C'est là ce que Jésus appelle encore (verset 65) un don de son Père. Sans doute, l'homme peut résister à cette action divine, mais une âme sincère, humble, repentante, altérée de justice et de paix, finit toujours par être attirée.

Il n'est donc point nécessaire de voir dans ce texte, avec Calvin et d'autres, la doctrine d'une prédestination divine, mais il est certain que le rapport de la souveraine grâce de Dieu et de la liberté de l'homme constitue un mystère qui ne nous sera révélé que dans la pure lumière.

- Le neutre : tout ce que le Père me donne, pourrait se rendre par : tous ceux que ; (Jean 6.39 ; 16.2) mais ce terme est choisi pour indiquer la totalité de ceux qui seront sauvés et qui trouveront leur bienheureuse unité dans leur communion avec le Sauveur. (Jean 17.21)

Le verbe viendra à moi (grec arrivera) signifie : parviendra au but, saisira définitivement le salut en Christ.
