Malheur aux pasteurs : aux rois de Juda, à qui Dieu avait confié le peuple de l'ancienne alliance pour présider à toute son éducation religieuse et morale et le conduire enfin à son Messie.

Qui perdent : voir 22.13-14 ; qui dispersent : en les menant d'infidélité en infidélité sur le chemin de l'exil. Ils les dispersent en obligeant Dieu à les disperser.

La retour des Juifs dans leur pays. (Jérémie 23:1-8)
La méchanceté des sacrificateurs et des prophètes de Juda, Le peuple est exhorté à ne pas tenir compte des fausses promesses. (Jérémie 23:9-22)
Ceux qui prétendaient avoir reçu l'inspiration divine, sont menacés. (Jérémie 23:23-32)
ainsi que ceux qui se moquaient de la véritable prophétie. (Jérémie 23:33-40)

Malheur à ceux qui sont établis pour s'occuper du peuple de Dieu, mais qui n'en prennent aucun soin ! Ce texte mentionne le réconfort que trouveront les brebis délaissées. Bien que seul un reste du « troupeau de Dieu » subsiste, Il le sauvera, et tous les Siens retrouveront leurs habitations d'origine, en Israël.

Christ est mentionné comme « une branche de la famille de David ». Il est « la droiture » en personne, et en Lui, tous les Siens sont justifiés. Christ brisera la puissance usurpée par Satan. Toute la lignée spirituelle d'Abraham, « celui qui marchait par la foi », et de Jacob, « celui qui priait », sera protégée, et sauvée de la culpabilité et de la domination du péché.

Tant que Christ règne en notre âme, cette dernière est à l'aise. Le texte utilise ces termes : « l'Éternel notre Justice ». Christ est en effet notre Justice, comme nulle autre créature ne pourrait l'être. Son obéissance à la mort est à l'origine de la justification des croyants, elle est la « garantie » d'une merveilleuse félicité céleste future. Cette sanctification, est la source de toute leur obéissance personnelle et de leur communion en Lui, par l'Esprit.

Ce Nom, chaque véritable croyant pourra l'invoquer. Nous n'avons rien d'autre à annoncer : Christ est mort, bien plus, Il est ressuscité, et Il est notre Seigneur !

Cette Droiture qui le caractérise, conforme aux exigences de la loi et de la Justice divines, devient désormais la nôtre : elle nous a été donnée comme un cadeau, par l'Esprit de Dieu ; Il nous en a revêtu, afin de nous permettre d'en bénéficier pleinement, avec tout l'intérêt que cela comporte !

« L'Éternel notre Justice », sont des termes de douceur, pour le pécheur convaincu, pour celui qui a ressenti, par le biais de sa conscience, la culpabilité de son péché. Celui qui a commis l'iniquité a besoin de cette droiture retrouvée, et de toute la puissance qui en résulte.

Le grand salut, celui offert par Christ, est bien plus glorieux que toutes les anciennes délivrances dont l'église a pu bénéficier. Que notre âme puisse être recueillie en Son sein, et soit trouvée en Lui !
