Quand vous aurez multiplié et fructifié. Ces deux expressions se trouvent déjà Genèse 1.28. L'accroissement de la nation est un signe de la faveur d'en-haut. La même promesse avait déjà été faite au peuple de Dieu : Deutéronome 28.3-4 ; 30.9 ; Esaïe 27.6 ; Osée 2.1 ; elle fut répétée plus tard : Jérémie 31.27 ; Ezéchiel 36.37.

En ces jours-là : expression très générale dans le langage de l'Ecriture et qui peut comprendre de longues périodes ; elle désigne ici le temps de la nouvelle alliance.

L'oracle contenu dans ce verset marque une des cimes de la révélation de l'Ancien Testament, et prépare les grandes prophéties des chapitres 31 et 33. Michée (chapitre 4) et Esaïe (chapitre 2) avaient déjà annoncé que Sion serait la capitale du royaume de Dieu, et que toutes les nations s'y rencontreraient pour s'instruire dans la loi de l'Eternel ; mais ils n'avaient pas encore annoncé aussi clairement que le fait Jérémie dans notre texte, l'abolition des anciennes formes religieuses et du sanctuaire extérieur de la théocratie. L'arche de l'alliance elle-même, qui était considérée comme le marche-pied de Dieu (1Chroniques 28.2 ; Psaumes 99.5 ; 132.7), et qui, depuis les temps les plus anciens (1Samuel 4.4), avait si souvent servi de prétexte à l'orgueil national d'Israël, cet antique palladium du peuple théocratique aura disparu et ne sera plus remplacé. Cela s'est accompli à partir du retour de la captivité et de la construction du second temple, dont le Lieu très saint resta vide ; et cependant la gloire de cette seconde maison devait être plus grande que celle de la première (Aggée 2.9). L'arche n'était donc en réalité qu'un symbole provisoire de la présence et de la grâce de Dieu. Quelques interprètes (M. Reuss) ont conclu de notre texte qu'au moment où Jérémie écrivait, l'arche n'existait plus ; cette opinion est réfutée par 2Chroniques 35.3.
