Tu as trompé ce peuple : par le moyen de ces faux prophètes que Dieu envoie pour aveugler les pécheurs endurcis (comparez 1Rois 22.19). C'est un des plus grands jugements de Dieu sur les peuples qu'il va frapper de leur enlever les conseillers sévères mais utiles, en même temps qu'il leur envoie les apôtres séduisants, mais funestes ; il n'y a rien là qui contredise l'idée d'un Dieu juste et saint. Les païens mêmes avaient observé ce phénomène du monde moral, et un poète latin a dit que Jupiter frappe de folie ceux qu'il veut perdre.
