Les douze pierres commémoratives
1 Lorsque tout le peuple eut fini de traverser le Jourdain, le Seigneur donna les instructions suivantes à Josué :2 « Choisissez douze hommes, un par tribu,3 et ordonnez-leur d’aller chercher douze pierres dans le lit du Jourdain, à l’endroit exact où les prêtres ont posé leurs pieds. Ils devront emporter ces pierres et les déposer dans le lieu où vous passerez la nuit. »4 Josué appela les douze Israélites qu’il avait fait choisir5 et leur dit : « Passez devant le coffre du Seigneur votre Dieu et allez au milieu du Jourdain. Là, que chacun de vous charge une pierre sur son épaule, afin qu’il y en ait une pour chaque tribu d’Israël.6 Ces pierres vous rappelleront ce qui s’est passé ici. Lorsque, dans l’avenir, vos enfants vous demanderont ce qu’elles signifient pour vous,7 vous leur répondrez : “Le cours du Jourdain s’est arrêté au passage du coffre de l’alliance du Seigneur. Oui, lorsque le coffre a traversé le Jourdain, le cours du fleuve s’est arrêté, et ces pierres doivent rappeler pour toujours aux Israélites le souvenir de ce prodige.” »8 Les hommes désignés obéirent aux ordres de Josué. Ils prirent douze pierres au milieu du Jourdain, une pour chaque tribu d’Israël, comme le Seigneur lui-même l’avait ordonné à Josué. Ils les emportèrent et les déposèrent là où ils passèrent la nuit.9 Josué fit également dresser douze pierres dans le lit du Jourdain, à l’endroit où les prêtres porteurs du coffre de l’alliance avaient posé les pieds. Elles s’y trouvent encore aujourd’hui.10 Les prêtres qui portaient le coffre restèrent debout dans le lit du Jourdain jusqu’à ce que le peuple eut exécuté toutes les instructions que le Seigneur lui avait transmises par l’intermédiaire de Josué. Ainsi Josué se conforma aux recommandations de Moïse. Le peuple se dépêcha de traverser le fleuve et,11 lorsque tout le monde fut sur l’autre rive, les prêtres allèrent se remettre en tête avec le coffre sacré.12 Les hommes en armes des tribus de Ruben et de Gad, ainsi que ceux de la demi-tribu de Manassé, traversèrent à la tête des autres Israélites, comme Moïse le leur avait ordonné.13 En présence du Seigneur, environ quarante mille soldats, prêts à combattre, franchirent le Jourdain en direction de la plaine de Jéricho.14 Ce jour-là, le Seigneur affermit l’autorité de Josué aux yeux de tous les Israélites et, durant toute sa vie, ils le respectèrent comme ils avaient respecté Moïse.15 Ensuite, le Seigneur dit à Josué :16 « Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent le coffre contenant le document de l’alliance de sortir du Jourdain. »17 Josué leur en donna l’ordre.18 Les prêtres obéirent, et dès qu’ils eurent posé les pieds sur le bord, la rivière se remit à couler et à inonder ses rives comme auparavant.19 C’est le dixième jour du premier mois que les Israélites franchirent le Jourdain. Ils établirent leur camp au Guilgal, à l’est de Jéricho.20 Josué fit dresser au Guilgal les douze pierres prises dans le Jourdain.21 Puis il dit aux Israélites : « Lorsque, dans l’avenir, vos enfants vous demanderont ce que signifient ces pierres,22 vous leur expliquerez comment le peuple d’Israël a traversé le Jourdain à pied sec.23 En effet, le Seigneur votre Dieu a asséché le Jourdain pour vous permettre de le franchir, tout comme il avait asséché pour nous la mer des Roseaux.24 Il a agi ainsi pour que tous les peuples de la terre sachent combien la puissance du Seigneur est grande, et pour que vous vous soumettiez toujours à l’autorité du Seigneur votre Dieu. » -

1 It happened, when all the nation had completely passed over the Jordan, that Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,2 "Take twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,3 and command them, saying, 'Take from out of the middle of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place, where you will lodge tonight.'"4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man.5 Joshua said to them, "Pass over before the ark of Yahweh your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you pick up a stone and put it on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;6 that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, 'What do you mean by these stones?'7 then you shall tell them, 'Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.'"8 The children of Israel did as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, as Yahweh spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.9 Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.10 For the priests who bore the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Yahweh commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and passed over.11 It happened, when all the people had completely passed over, that the ark of Yahweh passed over, with the priests, in the presence of the people.12 The children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke to them.13 About forty thousand men, ready and armed for war passed over before Yahweh to battle, to the plains of Jericho.14 On that day, Yahweh magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.15 Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,16 "Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan."17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, "Come up out of the Jordan!"18 It happened, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh had come up out of the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks, as before.19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.20 Joshua set up those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, in Gilgal.21 He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What do these stones mean?'22 Then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.23 For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you had passed over, as Yahweh your God did to the Red Sea , which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over;24 that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Yahweh, that it is mighty; that you may fear Yahweh your God forever.'"
